Chapter 18

They decided to start by checking in with the obvious suspects. Charlotte knocked softly on the door to the Aspen Room where presumably the officials were still waiting for today’s festivities to begin.

Apparently the ladies behind the Little Princess Pageant were very resilient. Listening to the cheerful chatter in the room, you would never guess that one of their close friends had died just yesterday.

Alexandra looked up and acknowledged them with a peppy little wave. Charlotte asked if there was anything else they could get for the women gathered in the Aspen Room.

“No, I think we are just fine. Ladies, are you ready to critique the swimwear segment? Now remember, let’s be kind in our criticism, we don’t want to break any little hearts,” Alexandra spoke jovially as she shooed the group of still chattering women towards the door.

The sound of their voices faded as they moved down the stairs and towards the main showroom. Charlotte looked at Lacey and raised her eyebrows.

“I was thinking exactly the same thing,” Lacey exclaimed.

“Right! Let’s look through their stuff while we know they are busy,” Charlotte had already moved to the side of the room where some of the ladies’ belongings were stacked.

Lacey joined her and they stopped for just a second, looking at each other.

“Are you sure this is okay for us to do? I mean we are invading their privacy,” Lacey asked.

“I think when someone dies on your property you have the right to do whatever is necessary to solve the mystery,” Charlotte said with a bravado she wasn’t completely sure of.

They began to look through the tote bags and satchels. At first they were hesitant but they grew bolder as the minutes ticked by without any interruptions. They had discovered nothing unusual in their search. Each bag contained a tablet, a few folders, makeup bags and water bottles. Charlotte even opened one of the water bottles and sniffed the contents. It smelled like water. Darn, they had gone out on a limb and had nothing to show for their efforts.

As she looked under the table, she noticed two handbags stashed there. Well, she thought, might as well go for it.

She handed the smaller bag to Lacey and she sat down on the floor and started looking through the larger one. She found a wallet that had a driver’s license with a youthful looking photo of Rachel Myers. She showed this to Lacey and Lacey produced a similar billfold that displayed a smiling picture of Gisele Flores.

Charlotte listened carefully for any sound that might signal someone coming towards this room. It would be very hard to explain both of them sitting on the floor with someone else’s purse in their lap.

“Jackpot!” Charlotte exclaimed as she held up a small battered photo album.

Lacey leaned over to look through the leather book. Charlotte paged through each scratched and dull plastic window.

“Wait, go back. Look, do you see that?” Lacey’s voice was tinged with excitement.

Charlotte started back at the beginning of the little book.
